Beer #9 – Fort Collins Chocolate Stout

It’s no secret among beer fans that Colorado has become some sort of a mecca for great beers.  They have great water, a population with a relaxed but adventurous mindset, and too many craft breweries to even name.  While they aren’t local for an Albanian like myself, I have an affinity for Colorado beer as I’ve had great experiences with the state and many of their breweries.  Today’s beer is another wintery choice, the Chocolate Stout from The Fort Collins Brewery.

Chocolate Stout, The Fort Collins Brewery
Colorado, United States of A
American Stout, 5.30% ABV

Aroma: Great nose of coffee and hops, balanced by a great chocolate scent that lingers when inhaled deeply.

Appearance: Nice foamy head, pours thick and dark brown/black.

Flavor: A nice toasty, bitter flavor and then bitter sweet chocolate finish, with a hint of lingering hops.  Smokey/chocolate flavor as an aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, smooth and rich up front, with nice carbonation that fills the mouth right before the swallow.

Overall: The aromas really set up this beer to deliver a lot, but I felt that while it was decent, I wanted a more pronounced chocolate flavor.  It has a nice mouthfeel and if you like subtlety, you will like this beer.  It’s not bad by any means and it’s a good American Stout, but not a session beer for me.

  1. Hi Chris,

Thanks so much for your review. You might be interested in our seasonal Double Chocolate Stout, which has more of that chocolate flavor you’re looking for! 🙂 Also, if you try the Chocolate Stout on Nitro, it also tends to pull out more of the chocolate.

Next time you’re in the Fort Collins area, hit us up for a tour – we’d love to have you!
